More and more places are now enjoying an addictive trend called pub quizzing. People today are more competitive than ever, but still like to have fun. Because of this, pub quizzing, also know as live trivia, has moved across the world. Live trivia is just as it sounds; a quiz held in a public place. Usually these events take place in the evening. These events originated in the United Kingdom in pubs. In the United States, you can go to a bar and participate in these quizzes.

Places started doing this to get more customers into the business. They started being held on slow evenings during the week to keep an average flow of customers. More businesses are now holding them on busy nights as well because the customers enjoy the live trivia. A well known business that uses this technique is Buffalo Wild Wings. Their trivia is set up using television set and hand held controllers.

Some times there is a fee required to participate because there is a winning pot at the end. Some pubs actually have a jackpot. The players can compete every week and let the money accumulate throughout the month. Then there will be a playoff at the end. The players with the most points will win the bigger jackpot. This is good because more people can join in the game throughout the month, and the pot could double or even triple.

These games can range from card games to an assortment of questions. Questions can be about general knowledge, history, geography, science, math, sports, entertainment (movies and television shows), famous people, music, and true or false. There can also be picture rounds where the players have to guess what the picture is, as in an item, or location. Another round could possible be a spelling or puzzle round.

A very interesting way to play live trivia is to split up into teams. Each team will be awarded points for correct answers, and they get to split the winnings at the end of the game. The maximum number for teams is generally six to ten people, and they get to choose a team name. A good way to get your team ahead in points is the double and triple bonus rounds. When the question is answered correctly, the winning team can either double or triple the value of points for that particular round.

These quizzes are set up in multiple answer formats while other pubs could use fill in the blank questions. If the questions require written answers, there will be a Quiz Master to determine whether the answer is correct. He or she will supply the players of the game with the appropriate equipment: pens, paper, etc.

Pub quizzing is a fun way to pass the time and be competitive with family and friends. It can also be a good way to pay for your drinks the next time you go out for a night of trivial fun! Enjoy your evening out making cash!

Where Shall We Drink? August 28, 2009

I have heard of an “Outhouse” but have you ever heard of a “Public House”. Well, unknown to you, you probably visit the “Public House” a few times a week! “Public House” refers to what we come to call a Pub. And as we all know a Pub is a place for drinking! What differentiates a pub from a bar or tavern? Not much apparently. While each term holds a different connotation or feel to it, ultimately, they mean the same thing.

Did you know that if you were to take a trip to Scotland before 1976 you wouldn’t find any establishment with the name pub? Turns out all drinking establishments were called hotels because on Sundays the only place allowed to serve alcohol was a hotel.

Of course, when I think of a pub my mind immediately thinks of London or England. Sadly enough, the amount of pubs operating in England are drastically decreasing. In England, pubs were the center meeting place for villages but as the metropolitan world continues to grow pubs are closing.

Did you know that windows of pubs are often frosted or of smoked glass so that passer-bys can’t see who is in the pub? This is an old tradition and as pubs start to re-decorate to be more in line with the times more and more clear windows are popping up.

Ever wonder where the concept of having a counter between you and our customer originated? It was Public Houses to introduce the concept of walking up to the counter to order your drink. Prior to the counter, waitresses used to bring drinks to a table.

Another group I think of when I think about pubs is the Irish. This is for good reason; in the United States all pubs are considered to be either themed “Irish” or “British”. Why is it when you enter a pub you always see an elaborate sign with the name of the establishment and a picture to illustrate it? In 1393 King Richard III encouraged all landlords to hang visible signs so that inspectors could find the pub more easily and as people were more and more illiterate in the Middle Ages the picture on the sign helped people determine which pub was which.

Ever wondered why the food at pubs was less than desirable. Well, in order to get cuisine that will wet your palate you need to seek out what is coined “Gastropubs”. These pubs are known to focus on the quality of food served. These pubs gave life to both the pop culture and British dining in the ‘90’s but has been criticized as one of the main reasons for the downfall of the traditional pub.

Either way, one thing can be promised to you when you enter a pub; you will be able to drink and that should be enough.

What’s to Know About Pub quizzes August 28, 2009

So, you didn’t get a call back from Jeopardy or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but no need to sulk! If you really want to strut your talent look to your local brewery or list of town happenings to see who is hosting the latest Pub quiz.

The Tastes, the Smells, the Competition

Pub quizzes are scheduled contests between teams with a maximum of six players. Each team comes up with a team name and every person on that team has to put the team name on any paper turned into the Quizmaster. Yes, I said Quizmaster; a host of sorts, if you will. A Quizmaster checks the answers a team has given, before they read the correct answers aloud. Pub quizzes are an hour and a half to two hours in length. All Pub quizzes consist of a call round (2), two handout rounds, and a final challenge. The first round is always the “Bingo Trivia” round. In this round, there are 25 questions answered on a bingo sheet. After the teams answer the questions, the Quizmaster will call off the answers in a random order. Just as if the team were playing the real bingo game, it is up to them to see whether they have circled five of their answers diagonally, across, or down. Whichever team is first, with the correct answers in the form of a bingo, will get 30 points and prevail as the winner of that round.

Onward to Round 2

Since Pub quizzes are meant to be fair, the type of questions asked will fluctuate. In the second round, teams are asked questions that deal with a variety of topics. These topics include arithmetic to geography, any of the sciences, all pop culture- music, movies, and television, or history. The difference in this round, is that the questions may come in the form of Jeopardy, Name that Tune, or multiple choice questions, such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. It all depends on the questions.

Can You Hang

Round three is usually a puzzle round. Whether this is a crossword, word searches, cryptograms, wordplay, or riddle, this round is usually played with each team member having a pencil. This round is not for the faint of heart and will call for the most perceptive of player as you never know what kind of puzzle you may have to prod your brain to figure.

Finally the Final!

The three teams that are victorious from the first two rounds battle it out in the final round. The third round is assorted enough to keep things fair. No matter where each team is at the beginning of this round, each has an equal chance at winning. Finally, one might want to know, what the prize is; this depends on the venue. Wherever you play, expect the respect of all the other teams for coming out triumphant. Possible prizes are free beer, free menu items, tee shirts, or free admission to the next Pub quiz.
